MYORS FM!

MYORS FM stands for 'making your own radio show' and that's exactly what you are going to do. This webquest can also be viewed on http://myors-fm.freeservers.com.

Introduction

I bet at least some of you have dreamed about becoming a DJ, well, this might be the ultimate chance for you to become one. You and 2 of your co-hosts are going to prepare, produce and present your own show at MYORS FM. This will consist of selecting songs, choosing a jingle, selecting a guest to interview and maybe a game of some sort. You're free to choose all kinds of songs and guests as long as they are English orientated and not insulting in any way. So, welcome at MYORS FM and enjoy the show.



The Task

In the end you should have made your own show consisting of a script of the entire show, this should be for a show of about 30 minutes. A partial recording of your show with a minimum of 10 and with a maximum of 15 minutes:

Making your show will require use of tape deck or maybe a cd writer if you have the possibility to use one. It's up to you. The world wide web will be the source to compare with other shows and to find the required information.



The Process

1.   First you'll be assigned to a team of 3 students consisting of at least one male and one female.

 

2. Group work: Discuss what songs, which guests or what kind of game you want on the show. There are several guests you can choose from:

  • David Beckham
  • George W. Bush
  • Avril Lavigne
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Oprah Winfrey

 

3. Group work: Divide the roles:

  • One is the DJ and is in charge of gathering information on the songs and singers.
  • One is the journalist and is in charge of investigating the chosen guest you are going to interview.
  • And thirdly there is the role of the producer who is in charge of the whole show, he/she has to listen to examples and he/she has to come up with a format for you show.

4. Individual work:

The DJ: A DJ always has to introduce the songs and therefore needs to know something about the song or the singer, for instance the date of when the song was first published, personal info on the singer and many more things.

The journalist: All journalists have to investigate the background of the person they will be interviewing.  Make a list of questions you want to ask your guest. Chances are pretty small that you will actually talk to you guest so you'll have to find the answers to your questions on the internet. 

The producer: You are responsible for the lay-out of the show. You have to listen to other radio shows; this may include Dutch ones. You have to look for audio links on the internet and list which ones you've listened to. Give a brief description on the shows (set-up, variation in songs, jingles, DJ's voice). 

 

5. Group work: Discuss what you've done so far. Present your work to each other:

  • The DJ has to tell which songs he/she selected and what will be told about the songs & singers.
  • The journalist has to tell what the famous person answered on the questions.
  • The producer has an important task in this. Firstly, he/she has to tell the others about the radio shows he/she visited on the internet. Then, he/she should invent a set-up for the show and talk about this with the DJ and Journalist.

6. Group work: Since the final task will only take about 30 minutes, you will have to leave out things. So the three of you have to make up their minds about what will be  presented and what won't.

In the script, you should include the following items:

  • a maximum of 5 songs (lyrics) and some info on the singers
  • an interview (questions & answers) 
  • the written text of what the DJ is going to tell his listeners
  • a game

7. Group work:

Select parts of the above items to include in your recording. Record some songs (you can record music while it's playing on your computer) .

  • The DJ has to introduce some songs and give some info on them.
  • The journalist should give a short summary of his  interview (just tell the most remarkable things).
  • The producer has to select a jingle for the show and organize the whole set-up (give instructions / assist the others).


Evaluation

You will be evaluated according to the following table:

Both the script and the recording should be in English.

You have to indicate which of you has done what, so that it will be clear that you have all done the same amount of work. 

The best thing is to type the script in Word, print it and give a copy to teacher. The three of you should discuss all the work before it's handed in. Make sure you save your file on your hard disk. Make sure your spelling is correct (use spelling checker!).

Record 10 to 15 minutes from MYORS-FM on a tape or CD. Hand this in to your teacher.

You will need about four lessons to complete the task. In the fifth lesson, all recordings will be presented to the teacher and fellow-students.


Conclusion

You, as DJ / Producer / Journalist of MYORS-FM! have learnt quite a number of things by completing the webquest tasks.

  • You have learnt how to work with a webquest.
  • You have practised and improved your computer skills.
  • You practised co-operating in small groups.
  • You worked on your speaking skills.
  • You worked on your writing skills.
  • You practised on how to use your creativity most efficiently.
  • You gained insight into the world of radio-making.

 In short, this has been a brilliant learning experience for you all!

We really enjoyed creating this webquest. In our view, webquests add a lot of fun and they open a whole new world for foreign language teaching.

So firstly, we'd like to thank Bernie Dodge and Tom March for inventing the whole webquest- idea. We used the original website, http://webquest.sdsu.edu a lot (especially to look at other examples).

Then we'd like to say thank you to our teacher, Edy van Renselaar, for introducing us to webquests / language quests. Her language quest, which you can find on http://www.talenquest.nl, was quite useful, too.

We'd like to express our thanks to our classmates, who commented on draft versions, and especially Wendy; she provided a lot of help in setting up our website.

We hope this webquest will prove to be efficient, interesting and helpful to many (student) teachers of English. We would love to hear your feedback!

Important notes

  • The main role of the teacher is to assist the pupils in carrying out their work. The teacher will be a caoch. Practically, this means that as a teacher, you have to help the pupils planning their work and make sure that the work is well divided between the students. It is important that the teacher and the students regularly meet each other to discuss the progress and any occurring problems. Since the students will have to do a lot work outside the claasroom, you will have to make regulations about that as well, so you can keep an eye on their process.   
  • This project can either be carried out in lessons in a row or with other class activities between them. We think students can work with this webquest for several weeks, depending on their level and web-experience. 
  • Our webquest, MYORS.FM, provides learning-centred material which can be used for a lesson series. This project will be most suitable for third graders (VMBO/HAVO/VWO) and can be slightly adapted to the different levels where necessary. In VMBO, the teacher will probably have to offer more guidance whereas we think that HAVO/VWO pupils can work on this webquest individually.
  • The subject of our webquest is "making a  radio show". We chose this subject because we think this is fascinating for teenagers and they are all acquainted with radio shows. They also know a lot of English songs and the guests are well-known people. We think that this webquest will turn out to be an inspiring learning experience for teacher and pupils both.
  • As you know, the "kerndoelen" insist that pupils should be able to find their way on the internet. This webquest is a practical way of acquiring the aims. Moreover, the theory of Multiplce Intellginces is also used. There is a lot of variety in the given tasks and the ways of working (individual, group work, presentations). The students combine their talents by co-operating. They have to use their reading, speaking and writing skills.
